As technology continues to evolve and the number of social media accounts grows, the opportunities for a successful marketing career are limitless. Whether you’re sharing your daily life with an audience or analyzing Instagram metrics for a major brand like an NFL team, there’s a marketing job for almost every interest and skill set.
Consider this article your guide to starting your journey in marketing. Regardless of where you’re coming from, this resource is here to help you take your first steps toward a successful marketing career.
As you read, visualize yourself achieving your goals and think about which of the five key strategies in this article will help you get closer to the success you’re aiming for in your marketing career.
Instrument #1: Become active on social media
To embark on a successful marketing career, you must know that a great majority of marketing is through social media.
From coordinating posts on Instagram to brainstorming ideas for a new Zara campaign.
Once you become accustomed to the world of social media and how algorithms work and why people use social media, you will begin to understand the system of it.
Studies show that people who are active on social media have been able to connect with others they share chemistry with.
Taking a look at clothing brands for example, each company has a slogan and a certain look they want to show to their audience.
It may be elegance, or sustainability, or even feminine. Learning how brands behave through social media is a nice tool to keep in your back pocket.
Instrument #2: Certifications Are Your Friend
Have you ever looked at your resume and felt like it didn’t have any “pizazz”?
As you progress in your marketing career, it's essential to continuously learn and adapt to industry trends for a truly successful marketing career.
I personally was late to the game of certifications. Google provides different certifications across all careers.
From e-commerce to digital marketing, the options are endless. Some are even free!
Having that extra spunk on your resume will help you stand out to an employer when you start to look for marketing jobs.
It shows them that you have the necessary skills to be a good fit for that position for that company.
You can never have enough, and by continuing to gain them shows that you are always willing to improve your craft. Employers love coachable employees.
Instrument #3: Start Learning Content Creation
Every post you see on social media is a form of content creation, and learning how to leverage this can be a key step in building a successful marketing career. Take TikTok, for example—many influencers follow a routine to plan, shoot, edit, and film their content. The great news is, you don’t have to overthink it. Anything from your daily life can be turned into engaging content. Start by filming simple clips of your morning routine, from brushing your teeth to making your breakfast.
Another great idea is filming a grocery haul. You’ll be surprised at how many people are curious about what’s in someone’s fridge.
These small yet relatable content ideas are a perfect starting point for anyone looking to build a successful marketing career in the digital space.
With content creation comes the need to learn how to edit. To create videos with jump cuts or other effects, mastering an editing software is essential.
Whether you use an external app or edit directly within the platform you’re uploading to, editing is an invaluable skill in the world of social media.
As you learn more about aspects like editing Instagram reels or crafting attention-grabbing TikToks, you’ll start to find your rhythm within social media.
Gaining experience in content creation, editing, and understanding user-generated content is crucial for anyone aiming to build a successful marketing career. With each step, you’ll be better equipped to engage audiences and create content that resonates, helping you progress in your marketing journey.
Instrument #4: Reach Out to Other People in Marketing
In building a successful marketing career, it's not what you know but who you know. Networking is a crucial part of marketing and can aid in your success.
Reaching out to others in your position or someone in a career you’d like to be in can only help you. Think about the right questions, ones that can provide you with substance.
Ask anyone and they will tell you a great tool is having a LinkedIn profile. LinkedIn is made to help connect people with others and grow as a platform.
You are able to find colleagues and CEO’s of fortune 500 companies through LinkedIn. You are also able to chat with them directly after you have connected.
Another place is coffee shops! Being in marketing, you do a lot of computer work. Coffee shops are riddled with computer workers, which include marketing people as well.
Hang out at your favorite shop and start to scope out the regulars and maybe say Hi to someone.
Everyone knows someone that knows someone else, so you never know who you might meet!
Instrument #5: Create a Vision Board
Vision boards are a great way to physically see your thoughts. Think about your career, and what you want out of it.
What do you want your life to look like? What does success and happiness look like to you? What do you want your career to make you feel?
Find images and quotes that represent those thoughts and compile them on a board. Print them out and glue them on a poster or make a digital one. (Canva is a great tool) When you complete it, observe how it makes you feel.
Even if you don’t do it for your career, you can make a vision board about anything!
Life, love, or goals. Make them as often as you want, its fun to compare them to see how your thoughts and goals have changed as you’ve aged and matured.
In conclusion, a successful marketing career requires a combination of foundational knowledge, ongoing learning, and adaptability.
Now that you have a starter pack on what instruments you can have to create a successful career in marketing, get started on your future.
Everyone’s path is different, so be aware that the time you complete a goal is not comparable to anyone else’s.
