Marketing Introduction

First things first, let's sharpen up our ideology of Marketing. What is it? And What's the big hype about it?

According to the American Marketing Association, Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that value customers, clients, partners, and society.

To simplify it, Marketing is engagement with a potential client in hopes of selling a product in an enticing way that makes them feel as though they can't live without it.

Engagement with clients can be made through different marketing channels such as Content Marketing, Sales Marketing, B2B or B2C marketing, email marketing, &, etc.

Don’t worry about these terms now; you’ll understand them more as you continue reading Marketing for Dummies.

You should have a goal in marketing to gain new customers and help your brand or other brands grow and maintain or increase their stance in the target market industry.

What’s the point of Marketing for Dummies anyway?

Marketing connects businesses to customers. Without marketing, there will be no sales, no branding, no advertisements… Absolutely nothing. Can you imagine that? Yeah, very boring.

The marketing industry is a multi-trillion-dollar industry with multiple pillars in it. So much goes into marketing; yes, it can also become easy to get wrapped up in it if you don’t understand what you want to do. That’s why it is crucial to understand the different scopes of marketing and how each one works with one another to create magic.

Now that we have the basics for Marketing for Dummies let's dig a little deeper.

Have you thought about what exactly you wanted to focus on in marketing and instantly got overwhelmed?

Did you realize there are a bunch of different job titles with basically the same job description but something different about each one? That’s completely understandable.

To transition from marketing for dummies to a marketing expert, you must understand the different pillars of marketing and how they are constantly being remixed and copied to win over a customer.

You also have to find your niche in marketing, an area where you know you are good at or can excel and contribute to making an impact.

You also don’t have to stick with only one place of marketing as well. Still, you don’t want to overstimulate yourself by picking up so much that you can’t properly handle your roles.

Here are some common marketing areas to get you started if you haven’t already found your marketing niche.

Don’t take in everything you hear

There are lots of things that need to be clarified about marketing. Don’t believe the Debbie downers that will tell you that marketing is an “easy job” that won’t benefit you in the long run. There’s no easy job on this planet. If you want to be successful at something, you have to put in the work.

Yes, this blog is titled Marketing for Dummies, but it’s curated for the smartest and brightest that want to take over the marketing industry.

To be a great marketer, you must learn how to network and make connections. The more connections you make, the more knowledgeable you become and the more access you get to people who are like-minded as you.

Learn to speak and communicate well and accurately. Effective communication will help you in professional settings and work in a team. (It is also a great soft skill to put on your resume!)

Block out negativity and trust in yourself and the work you can produce.

Things to remember when it comes to marketing

  • A good product and brand are essential before you apply marketing strategies to reach your target audiences. People tend to trust brands highly recommended by others, so marketing a brand with a good rapport with its audience is very important.
  • Take the marketing advice you get with a grain of salt. What works for some may not work for others, so always try to test things out before quickly deeming some strategies good.
  • Getting things correct on the first run is hard, but it's possible. If you get it on the first run, that’s amazing, but if you don’t, please don’t beat yourself up. That’s what separates a great marketer from a lazy one.
  • You are always learning as a marker, so actively sharpen your skills and stay up to date with the latest marketing trends.
  • Marketing is FUN! Take advantage and soak it all in! This field encourages you to be yourself, be creative, and voice your opinions.
